Taylor Industries Turns to Emerson Climate Technologies for Advanced Control Solutions Challenge
Taylor Industries sells and installs a wide variety of refrigeration, HVAC, food service products, and automatic doors for many types of businesses including supermarket superstores, corner convenience stores, neighborhood restaurants, corporate cafeterias, and more.
In November of 2000, Taylor Industries was charged with a challenging expansion project for Omaha, Nebraska's D&D Salads, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hy-Vee, Inc., one of the top 15 supermarket chains in the nation.
For this extensive, complicated project Taylor required a control manufacturer who could not only provide the most advanced control technology, but also work as a team with the Taylor installation staff.
Solution
For Taylor Industries, the choice was easy: Taylor had an excellent working relationship with Emerson Climate Technologies division Computer Process Controls (CPC), for more than 15 years.
Taylor used CPC for most control and monitoring functions of the HVAC and refrigeration systems. Specifically, Taylor employed CPC's Einstein RX Refrigeration Controller.
A Taylor Industries spokesperson stated, "For the D&D Salads project, we used Einstein to help develop custom algorithms to control variable speed pumps and modulating gas-fired burners to maintain space setpoints. Various system temperatures and pressures are tied into the control system for monitoring and troubleshooting functions."
Benefits
Benefits of using the Einstein controller include:
●
The largest display (640 x 480 VGA) and keypad of any controller designed specifically for refrigeration control
●
It can be used to control suction groups, condensers, and case circuits. Power monitoring is also available within the controller
●
Design allows users to set up custom control algorithms and schedules taking advantage of powerful control algorithms
●
Users can combine multiple inputs to generate various outputs for their specific needs
●
Einstein is set up to take advantage of global data points, allowing the user to minimize the number of required sensors
●
Users can communicate with Einstein via an Ethernet connection or through standard modem systems using UltraSiteTM, allowing users to take advantage of existing LAN (local area network) lines reducing phone charges and increasing communication speeds

"...We used Einstein to develop custom algorithms to control variable frequency drives for cooling on all glycol coils," the Taylor spokesperson added. "Einstein provides emergency shutdown capability for the ammonia system. The control system is accessible from on-site control panels in the service area and from computers located in the offices for system monitoring and auto-polling. The control system is also connected to the phone system, via a modem, for remote computer access. Status of several critical temperature and pressure sensors are tied into D&D Salads' security contractor for remote alarming."
