EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES UNVEILS RESEARCH FACILITY TO AID IN DEVELOPMENT OF INTELLIGENT STORE™ SOLUTIONS

ST. LOUIS, September 19, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today announced the completion of a new research facility dedicated to exploring methods of improving store equipment operations. Designed to develop and test products and systems in a real-world environment, it will play a key role in further developing Emerson’s Intelligent Store™ and improving the efficiency of the overall operating envelope. The facility will run a variety of test scenarios to aid in the research, development and design of HVACR systems, controls and technologies used in the supermarket and retail industries.

According to Ross Dueber, Emerson Climate Technologies vice president of strategic planning and platforms, the research and development center will fill a much-needed role in the supermarket industry. “With the rise of refrigeration technology in the supermarket industry today, it is becoming necessary for manufacturers to provide more advanced and efficient solutions to their customers, solutions like Emerson’s Intelligent Store,” said Dueber. “Our new facility will test such solutions under real operating conditions, as this step is essential in ensuring the quality and value of the products the end-users receive.”

The research and development facility demonstrates Emerson Climate Technologies’ continuing commitment to developing the best and most comprehensive solutions for the supermarket industry. Emerson’s Intelligent Store, which provides a framework to the industry to design products, software and services that work better together, will continue to improve as a result of the facility. Many of the products tested there will carry the new Intelligent Store-compatible badge, which quickly identifies products that have advanced functionality such as communications or enhanced control strategies.

In addition to Intelligent Store solutions, refrigeration systems, components and the integration of equipment solutions will also be tested and refined. For example, new low- and medium-temperature refrigeration racks with all Emerson Climate Technologies products will be tested, to better understand how products are applied in supermarkets how they can be enhanced to further improve their performance.

According to Russ Brandt, manager of the research center, the testing scenarios conducted in the facility will result not only in products and solutions being brought to market more quickly, but also in products having better operational data so that retailers can truly understand the product’s potential before in-store deployment.

“Until now, when a product was being developed, the individual product would be tested, then the device would be installed in an operating supermarket, which obviously limits the range of testing that can be completed. Once those tests were complete, the product became available to other operators,” said Brandt. “Now we can run test scenarios on the product and observe the impact on the entire system over a broad range of operating conditions while it is still being developed. This gives us an easy way to discover precisely how it will work in a system and how we can improve products while still demonstrating their performance for our customers.”

The facility will be fully operational by mid-October. Technicians will then spend approximately three months establishing baseline operations for a wide variety of equipment. This baseline will be used for all testing scenarios moving forward. Initial test scenarios will focus on supermarket operations, with plans to eventually expand the facility to include convenience-store, restaurant and retail-store equipment.

“The cost of obtaining facility information is greatly reduced, while the ease of accessing information is substantially improved,” said Dueber. “This is an opportunity for our business partners to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of their products while learning more about the ways that their products affect the system as a whole.”

Emerson’s Intelligent Store is an integrated suite of products and services that provides retail operators a new level of sophistication and insight into their operations. The Intelligent Store is comprised of innovative products and services from Emerson Climate Technologies and other providers that, when combined, can provide maintenance, energy and reliability gains.
